Registration Now Open for Red Stick International Animation Festival, April 16-19 in downtown Baton Rouge
Animation enthusiasts of all ages now can log onto www.redstickfestival.org and register for passes to attend the 2008 Red Stick International Animation Festival, which will take place April 16-19 in downtown Baton Rouge’s Arts District.
The festival, which researchers with LSU’s Center for Computation & Technology, or CCT, created in 2005, highlights the links between art and technology and shows how digital media are leading to economic development opportunities for the state and the city. Red Stick is sponsored by CCT in partnership with the East Baton Rouge Parish Mayor-President’s Office, the Louisiana Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism, the Baton Rouge Area Chamber, the Baton Rouge Area Foundation and Louisiana Economic Development.
The majority of Red Stick activities will take place at the Shaw Center for the Arts, the Manship Theatre, the Louisiana Art and Science Museum, or LASM, and the Old State Capitol. A full schedule of 2008 Red Stick activities is available at www.redstickfestival.org.
Festival-goers can register for either a Red or Gold Pass to attend Red Stick events. A Red Pass is no-cost to participants and entitles them to attend all festival film screenings and family events. Red Stick offers free animation screenings for families and this year, as many films as possible will be shown in high-definition or 35 mm for the best possible viewing.
A Gold Pass entitles participants to attend all lectures offered at the 2008 Red Stick Festival, in addition to the free screenings. Gold Passes are $50, but will be available to any faculty or staff from an educational institution for $25, and will be available to any students for $20. If someone purchases five or more student Gold Passes, the rate will be further reduced to $10 per student pass.
In addition to lectures and screenings, participants can attend the workshops offered this year for $20 each, with a $10 each discount rate for students. Workshops feature professionals in animation, video game development and other digital media industries who will teach participants tips for breaking into the industry. Attendants must register for a Gold Pass before they can purchase admission to the workshops. Red Pass participants are not be eligible to attend any workshops.
There is no additional workshop fee for Gold Pass holders who wish to participate in the Red Stick “Pitch!” Contest. However, Pitch! participation does have minimum requirements and separate registration. Participants are able to present their idea for an animated television series to a panel of acquisitions executives from major animation studios. Full details on the 2008 Pitch Contest are available at http://redstickfestival.org/main/menu/pitch.
The festival also will host several special activities for animation enthusiasts of all ages on Friday night, April 18. Red Stick will host a special performance of artist J Walt’s “Spontaneous Fantasia” show at LASM’s Irene W. Pennington Planetarium, hosted by Sky-Scan. In this show, Walt creates animation in a live performance, projecting the images, set to music, on the planetarium’s domed ceiling.
Beginning at 7 p.m., Red Stick will feature our first ever “Princess Ball” in the Old State Capitol Senate Chamber. Girls are invited to come dressed up and learn how to dance with their father, brother, uncle, grandfather or best friends. Red Stick will award a prize to the wearer with the prettiest dancing slippers. The event is free, but we are asking for donations of $5 per family for the event, all the funds raised will support The Girl Scouts, The Boys and Girls Club of Baton Rouge, and the Old State Capitol.
Saturday, April 19 at 10 a.m. will be Cartoon-a-Palooza, an annual highlight of the festival where children come to the Old State Capitol for a free breakfast and Saturday morning cartoons. Clowns, spacewalks and face-painting will be on the grounds during this event. This year, Cartoon-a-Palooza will feature Curtis Jobling, creator of “Frankenstein’s Cat,” Eric Shaw, writer for “Sponge Bob Square Pants,” and the voice of “Scooby-Doo,” Scott Innes, to show cartoons and sign autographs for children. The Baton Rouge Cartoonists Society will host a special workshop for children Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Old State Capitol Senate Chamber.
And, Saturday night will mark the world premier of Comet Entertainment’s new holiday animated film, “Santa vs. Claus.” Red Stick will host the worldwide film premier at 7 p.m. in the Manship Theatre and will invite children to attend dressed as their favorite Santa’s helper. Santa himself will make an appearance and share cookies and milk with the children before the film. Santa will be in attendance, and everyone will get a chance to meet the producers of the film.
