CCT Hosts Second Beowulf Boot Camp to Inspire High School Students
Professor Thomas Sterling’s research group, in collaboration with CCT faculty and staff, hosted the second Beowulf Boot Camp on the LSU campus June 15-19, with 23 students and one teacher from 14 Louisiana high schools participating.
During the camp, students worked hands-on with University researchers to learn basic supercomputer skills. The students worked in small groups to build computer clusters from scratch, then connected the clusters together to form a mini supercomputer. The students developed and ran basic applications, and learned how to program using Python.
At the end of the camp, the students conducted an HPC Challenge to see how the mini supercomputer they built measured up against the largest and fastest supercomputers in the world.
CCT hosted a banquet for the students and their parents on Friday, June 19, to honor their achievements. Professor Sterling presented the students with certificates of completion for the camp, and the students heard testimonials from Professor Sterling and undergraduate research student Phillip LeBlanc, who attended the first Beowulf Boot Camp in 2007, encouraging them to consider attending college at LSU, and to consider computational science as a field to study.
In future years, CCT hopes to work with other universities through the Louisiana Optical Network Initiative to offer the summer camp outreach to more students throughout the state.

• Susanne Brenner has been appointed to the Scientific Committee for the International Centre for Pure and Applied Mathematics (CIMPA), a UNESCO center established in Nice, France in 1978. The aim of CIMPA is to promote international cooperation in higher education and research in mathematics and related subjects, particularly computer science, for the benefit of developing countries.
