LSU Researchers Part of Team Submitting Supercomputer Grant Request to the National Science Foundation
A team of researchers from Louisiana State University, led by Department of Computer Science Professor Thomas Sterling, was part of a group that partnered with Sandia National Laboratory to submit a National Science Foundation grant proposal to build the first informatics supercomputer.
Sandia National Laboratory is the primary leader on this initiative, and the other project partners include LSU, Sun Microsystems, Lexis Nexis, Indiana University – Bloomington and University of Notre Dame. The grant proposal is in response to the National Science Foundation’s latest call for proposals to build new supercomputing systems that represent unique innovation.
The computer the Sandia-led group proposes would work on multi-core processing, which represents next-generation computing architecture. Professor Sterling’s research focuses on this area, with work on the ParalleX project, which seeks to develop future models for computer architecture.
Richard Murphy of Sandia National Laboratory acted as principal investigator for the overall project, with Professor Sterling as co-principal investigator from LSU. Professor Ram Ramanujam, LSU Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, acted as co-investigator for the proposal. Both Sterling and Ramanujam hold joint appointments with the CCT, and LSU’s participation in this project would involve the center as well as faculty from the departments of Computer Science and Electrical and Computer Engineering.
If the Sandia-led group receives approval for the project, the National Science Foundation supercomputer would be housed there, but LSU would house a test machine for the project, and faculty and staff from the University would support its operations. The LSU group also would use the TeraGrid connections through the Louisiana Optical Network Initiative, or LONI, to make the computing cycles from this machine available to the national scientific research community.
The National Science Foundation will announce award recipients in late spring 2009.

Pats On The Back:
• Dan Katz gave an invited to talk at Monash University in Melbourne on the “Louisiana Model for Advancing Regional Cyberinfrastructure.” Katz also edited an issue of the IJHPCN, which was released this month.
Upcoming Lectures:
• There are no remaining lectures scheduled for this week.
Please Note:
• The next ALL CCT Meeting is scheduled for this Wednesday, Dec. 17 from 3 – 4 p.m. If you have any information to be included in the meeting, please send it to Karen Jones, kjones@cct.lsu.edu.
• The University will be closed in observance of holiday season from Dec. 24, 2008, through Jan. 1, 2009.
• Additionally, Chancellor Martin has directed that the University remain closed on Friday, January 2, 2009, except for essential operations. Because Jan. 2 is not an official University holiday, employees paid on a fiscal basis will be required to take annual leave, compensatory time or leave without pay for this day. LSU HRM must approve anyone placed on leave without pay for Jan. 2. For employees with accrued leave, annual leave of 8 hours will be charged automatically to their leave tracking for Jan. 2. Employees do not need to submit forms or leave slips for this day. Employees who object to taking the required leave must notify their immediate supervisor, and both the employee and his/her supervisor must contact CCT’s HR Coordinator, Laurie Rea (lrea@cct.lsu.edu/8-1331), before Dec. 23. Questions can be directed to LSU Payroll at 8-3321 or LSU HRM at 8-8200.
• The CCT Faculty Research Retreat is scheduled for Thursday and Friday, Jan. 8 & 9, 2009, in New Orleans.
• Abstracts for Scientific and Statistical Database Management 2009, held in New Orleans, are due on Jan. 9, 2009.
• CCT has been notified of a new requirement concerning all LSU Foundation reimbursement requests. In advance of any event that will require foundation reimbursement, such as but not limited to visitor meals over the state per-diem rate or meals/events that include alcoholic beverages, we must submit a prior-approval/advance request for the reimbursements. This request must be submitted for review before the planned expenditure is incurred. Additionally, the request must include (1) a statement indicating the specific program that will benefit from the expenditure and (2) how the program and benefit fit into the CCT's strategic plan. While we apologize for the additional layer of paperwork related to foundation reimbursements, it is essential that we begin following this new requirement. Active and future foundation reimbursement requests will not be approved and reimbursed unless the additional documentation has been provided. Karen Jones, Theresa Markey, and/or Joel Williams are available to explain how their information needs to be submitted and to help as needed. Please let us know if you have any questions, and thanks in advance for your cooperation.
• CCT is accepting applications from high schools to attend the CyberTools Boot Camp (July 6-10, 2009). If you have worked with Louisiana high school students and know of a school, teacher or students who might be interested, please notify Kathy Traxler, ktraxler@cct.lsu.edu. More information about the camp is available online at: http://www.cct.lsu.edu/CyberToolsCamp09.
• If you have any news for the CCT Weekly, please e-mail PR Manager Kristen Sunde directly at ksunde@cct.lsu.edu.
