CCT Announces Red Stick Festival Winners
CCT announces the winners for the 2008 Red Stick International Animation Festival Awards. The winners received their prizes in an awards ceremony on the last day of the festival, Saturday, April 19.
The festival, which took place April 16-19, received 207 film submissions from 27 countries for the annual competition. The festival awarded “Best of the Fest” prizes in five categories.
The winners of the 2008 Red Stick International Animation Festival are:
• Best Animated Short Film – Student: “Tong,” by David Cellier, Florent Limouzin, Arnaud Real (France) and Ecole Supérieure des métiers Artistiques (ESMA.)
• Best Animated Short Film – Professional: “Une petite histoire de l'image animée,” by Joris Clerté (France) and Doncvoilà & Mikros Image.
• Best Music Video: “Whatcha Got?” by Rogier Wieland (Netherlands.)
• Best Animation for Young Audiences: “Who’s That Knock’n?” by Peter Hriso and Gigi Alandt (United States.)
• Best Experimental Animation/Visual Music – Professional: “Mercurius” by Brett Battey (United States) and DeMontfort University (United Kingdom.)
The award-winning films and the runners-up in each category were shown during the festival as part of Red Stick’s “Best of the Fest” screenings.
Red Stick International Animation Festival will next take place April 22-25, 2009. Red Stick will announce the 2009 categories and begin the call for submissions in August 2008 at the SIGGRAPH convention in Los Angeles.

• Bijaya Karki, Ph.D., CCT and LSU Department of Computer Science, won the 2008 Phi Kappa Phi non-tenured faculty award in the natural and physical sciences. Professor Karki received his award in a ceremony April 21 with Provost Astrid Merget. Congratulations!

Red Stick Animation Festival features two premieres

The fourth annual Red Stick International Animation Festival will take place April 16-19, and will feature two film premieres. Santa vs. Claus, a holiday-themed movie, will have its world premiere at 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 19 at the Manship Theatre.

Upcoming Lectures:
• CCT Colloquium Series: Georgios Veronis, CCT and Electrical & Computer Engineering Assistant Professor, will give a lecture titled “Modeling Of Nanophotonic Devices For Manipulating Light At Deep Subwavelength Scale” on Friday, April 25 at 11:30 a.m. in Johnston Hall room 338.
• Special Guest Lecture: Steven Detweiler, Professor of Physics at the University of Florida, will deliver a lecture titled “Gravitational Waves From Small Black Holes Orbiting Big Ones,” on Monday, April 28 at 2 p.m. in Johnston 338.
• IMPORTANT: Anyone organizing a lecture OR EVENT should first check with Karen Jones for available dates to avoid having multiple lectures/events on the same day. Also, coordinate with your Focus Area lead so that CCT can get the best attendance possible. There may be open slots in a standard lecture series that need to be filled.
