LSU, Tulane Faculty Partner to Host “Scientific Computing Around Louisiana”
BATON ROUGE – LSU’s Center for Computation & Technology, or CCT, and Tulane University’s Center for Computational Science will co-sponsor Scientific Computing Around Louisiana, or SCALA, for a second year. This year, the event will be held at Tulane University January 28-29.
SCALA 2011 will feature invited lectures by Robert H. Dillon, Washington State University; Beatrice Riviere, Rice University; and Daniel Szyld, Temple University. There will also be contributed presentations and discussion sessions.
Professors Susanne C. Brenner, CCT and LSU Department of Mathematics, and Lisa J. Fauci, Tulane University, created SCALA to highlight cutting-edge topics in scientific computing, showcase research that is taking place in Louisiana, and promote collaborations across the state.
Faculty, postdoctoral researchers, or students from colleges and universities in or around Louisiana are welcome to attend. Registration is free, but required.

CCT Spotlight: Ole Weidner
Ole Weidner, a native of Flensburg, Germany, joined CCT in 2006 as an IT Research Manager. He now serves as the technical project manager for the SAGA (Simple API for Grid Applications) distributed computing project, led by Dr. Shantenu Jha.
SAGA is an application programming interface that provides the basic functionality required to build distributed applications, tools and frameworks so as to be independent of the details of the underlying infrastructure. SAGA can be used to provide simple access layers for distributed systems and abstractions for applications and thereby address the fundamental application design objectives of Interoperability across different infrastructure, Distributed Scale-Out, Extensibility, Adaptivity whilst preserving simplicity.
In addition to working on SAGA, Ole is pursuing his PhD in Informatics from the University of Edinburgh, under the direction of Professor Malcolm Atkinson. His research interests include patterns, algorithms and abstractions for dynamic distributed applications and Autonomic Computing concepts and implementations. Also of interest to him, outside of his PhD work, is Physical Computing, Robotics and Computer Art. Ole chose this field of study because he loves finding new ways to solve problems.
When Ole has down-time from his research and studies, he enjoys surfing, kitesurfing and cycling. When asked to choose between LSU Football or the Symphony, and the seasons of Spring or Fall, he chose the Symphony and the Fall. Ole's favorite gadget is the espresso machine located in the third floor kitchen of Johnston Hall.

• SCIENTIFIC COMPUTING AROUND LOUISIANA (SCALA 2011) January 28-29, 2011 Tulane University, New Orleans
o Tulane University's Center for Computational Science and the LSU Center for Computation and Technology (CCT) will co-sponsor a meeting to highlight cutting-edge topics in scientific computing, showcase the research at Louisiana institutions and promote collaborations across the state of Louisiana.This meeting is open to any faculty, post-doctoral researcher or student from any college in and around Louisiana. • This summer, CCT will host its second Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU), a nine-week program that gives students an opportunity to join interdisciplinary research groups and use the advanced cyberinfrastructure available on campus to work collaboratively on computational science projects. Each participating student will receive a stipend of $4,500, free housing in University dormitories, and up to $500 in travel expenses. Interested undergraduate students from any academic discipline are welcome to apply. Applications are due February 28, 2011, and students will be notified of whether they have been accepted by March 31.
