The Sustainable Bioproducts Initiative is a USDA sponsored program based in the LSU Agricultural Center that concerts university and industry partners to study the production and conversion of biomass crops to biofuels and bioproducts. Modeled after the existing biorefinery capacity within the Louisiana sugar industry, the project goals included: i) production, harvest, and transport logistics for dedicated bioenergy crops; ii) siting of prospective new biorefineries; and iii) identification of high-value specialty products and chemical feedstocks from bioenergy crops. Selected industry partners have utilized several of these feedstocks in their fuels and chemicals platforms to produce ‘green’ transportation fuels, biopolymers, nanomaterials, and other products. 

Dr. John S. Russin serves currently as Vice-Chancellor for Strategic Initiatives and holds the honorary title of

G&H Seed Company Endowed Professor in the Louisiana State University Agricultural Center. He serves also as Director of the Sustainable Bioproducts Initiative, a consortium of university, industry, and government partners focused on developing industrial biomass and syrup feedstocks for the southeastern United States. He was selected in 2015 as a Fulbright Specialist with expertise in administrative areas including industry partnerships, applied research, technology transfer, stakeholder outreach, fund raising, student and alumni relations, and entrepreneurship. He holds degrees from University of Maine, University of Delaware, and University of Kentucky.
