In this seminar, the results of a three year study will be presented in which the outcomes for persisting in computer science education were remarkable: 65% pursuing computer science related studies after high school compared with only 20% who expressed an interest in majoring in computing when the program began. The design, implementation, and evaluation of the Glitch Game Testers program will be discussed plus plans to extend it towards a sustainable educational model for teaching computer programming.

Dr. Kenneth Perry is Chair of the Department of Computer Science at Morehouse College. He is a leader in computer science education for young African American men, and has a unique perspective on the issues that arise in attracting members of this demographic to the field and how to support their success in school and beyond. He has developed interactive educational software for teaching: (Perry & Suarez), “Data Path Rhythms”, ADMI 98; (Perry & Lawson), “The Pipeline Animator”, Frontiers in Education Conference, 1997.  He designed algorithms and implemented the first three modem chipsets (1200, 2400 and 4800 bps full-duplex) for Hayes Microcomputer Products.
