Abstract: Rooted in the art movements known as Pataphysics and Visual Music, the work of Jeremy Speed Schwartz spans animation, performance and interactive art, while finding innovative ways of utilizing and abstracting the human body as a visual and kinetic experience. This presentation will explore concepts of synesthesia, the uncanny, and the influence of emerging science in artistic practice. Speed Schwartz will share his research, work and processes, including alternative approaches to stop-motion, programmatic animation and interactive digital art.

Speaker's Bio: Jeremy Speed Schwartz is currently employed at the following: Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, as an Artist in Residence; Psychiatric Medical Records systems, Los Angeles, as an Interactive Design, Systems Coordinator; Freewaves, Los Angeles, as a New Media and Web Developer; Los Angeles FilmForum, as a New Media and Web Developer; International School of Motion Pictures, Torrance, as a Film History Instructor; and iotaCenter, Culver City, Los Angeles, as a Digital Technologies Development consultant. Schwartz received his Bachelor of Arts in Film and Digital Media from the University of California at Santa Cruz in 2004, and his Master of Fine Arts in Experimental Animation from the California Institute of the Arts, Valencia, California, in 2007. Schwartz has various film, video work, and live performance credits which include animator, director, editor, writer, composer, programmer, set design, and musical director. His awards include: Apexart grant (with the League of Imaginary Scientists)-2009; Hollywood Foreign Press Digital Labs Scholarship-2006; James Elrond scholarship for information technologies-2005; and, Service Award, University of California, Santa Cruz Film and Digital Media department-2004.
