Louisiana State University, Digital Media Center
Begin a programming and problem solving journey that will unlock the power of Python! Learn the fundamentals of this general-purpose, high-level scripting language with a fun, step-by-step approach that makes coding easy and exciting for young students.
The LSU Center for Computation & Technology (CCT) will host the PyFUN Programming Summer Camp for boys and girls entering grades six through nine (6-9) in the Baton Rouge and surrounding areas. This 5-day camp will consist of basic concepts of programming that are used in any programming language, and will include:
- Computational thinking
- What the parts of a computer are and how they work together
- Strings and console output
- Conditionals and flow control
- Functions, lists, dictionaries, and loops
- Introduction to classes
- File input and output
- Automation of common tasks
Complete fun mini-challenges throughout the week and get a taste for real-world programming! Students will also create a webpage that parents may use to see the problems solved and code created each day as well as their student's description of the day.
Middle school age children (entering grades 6-9) in the Baton Rouge and surrounding areas. General computer knowledge required-this is a beginner level course.
$155.00 pp. CCT will provide computers, supplies and lunches during the camp, but participants are responsible for arranging their own transportation to and from LSU’s campus. CCT will accept participants on a first-come, first-serve basis.
9:00 AM - 4:00 PM; two snacks and a lunch will be provided each day.
Location - LSU Campus, Digital Media Center, Room 1034. Map it!
Taught By Kathy Traxler, LSU CCT's education, outreach and training specialist. Extensively trained in computational sciences, Ms. Traxler spreads knowledge about the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines that abound the computational field.
