Red Stick International Animation Festival Announces 2009 Competition Winners

BATON ROUGE – The largest animation festival in the United States today announced the winners of its annual Best of the Fest film competition.

Red Stick International Animation Festival received a record 435 entries from 45 countries for the 2009 competition. The festival accepted entries from Aug. 1, 2008, through Jan. 2, 2009.

“We received a lot of top-quality work this year, from more countries than have ever participated before,” said Stephen David Beck, Ph.D., host of the Red Stick International Animation Festival and Interim Director of the LSU Center for Computation & Technology. “We also were fortunate to partner with 2theadvocate.com to let more people participate in our film jury and screen this original work. We hope to receive even more entries for the 2010 competition.”

The winners of the 2009 Best of the Fest Competition are:

Animated Short Film – Student
:
Office Noise directed by Mads Johansen, Torben Søttrup, Karsten Madsen, and Lærke Enemark (Denmark)

Animated Short Film – Professional
:
Hot Dog directed by Bill Plympton (USA)

Animation for Commercials:
Virgin Media – Therapy directed by Rob Cazin (USA)

Animation for Young Audiences
:
The Curse of Skull Rock directed by Ben Smith (United Kingdom)

Experimental Animation/Visual Music – Professional:
Escape from the Temple directed by Zhou Xing (China)

Experimental Animation/Visual Music – Professional:
Lost Utopia directed by Mirai Mizue (Japan)

Music Video:
Hey directed by Guy Ben Shetrit (Israel)

Red Stick International Animation Festival events took place April 22-25 in downtown Baton Rouge. This year, the festival showcased more competition work in its free film screenings to give participants a chance to see the original animated work the festival received.

The festival will announce categories for its 2010 Best of the Fest competition in August 2009, during SIGGRAPH, the premier conference on computer graphics and interactive systems, which will take place Aug. 3-7 in New Orleans.

LSU’s Center for Computation & Technology sponsors the festival, in partnership with the Baton Rouge Area Chamber, Baton Rouge Area Foundation, East Baton Rouge Parish Mayor-President’s Office, Louisiana Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism and Louisiana Economic Development.
