BATON ROUGE – Rudy Hirschheim, a professor with the LSU Center for Computation & Technology and Ourso Family Distinguished Professor in LSU’s Department of Information Systems & Decision Sciences, will have a paper published in the November edition of Communications of the ACM. Hirschheim’s paper, “Offshore Drilling and the New World Order,” focuses on the changing role of the information technology industry. In the paper, he argues that increased offshore drilling by U.S. firms, coupled with dramatic declines in students enrolling in computer science programs, has led to a new type of globalization within the IT industry. Specifically, the paper explores how educators can help prepare IT students for the coming “new world order.” “Corporations who hire IT students want them to be business analysts and not programmers,” Hirschheim explained in the paper. “We need to teach them people skills, knowledge of business and the ability to help organizations find and refine business processes.” A faculty member since 2003, Hirschheim received his Ph.D. from the University of London in 1985. He teaches seminar courses in information systems and advanced business systems. His article is based on a commencement address he gave at the University of Frankfurt in Germany in 2005. Communications of the ACM is the leading print and online publication for the computing and information technology fields.
