CCT Staff Participate in TeraGrid 2009 Conference

Several CCT faculty, staff members and students attended the fourth annual TeraGrid Conference June 22-25, which took place in Arlington, Virginia. This conference showcases research and education achievements accomplished with TeraGrid resources, and features presentations, papers, demos, poster sessions and visualizations.

Louisiana became a TeraGrid resource provider in late fall 2007 and became fully integrated onto the TeraGrid in February 2008, through the Louisiana Optical Network Initiative’s centerpiece computer, Queen Bee.

From the CCT, Erik Schnetter, Daniel S. Katz and Gabrielle Allen served as Science Track session chairs. Erik Schnetter and his Cactus team, including Frank Loffler and Oleg Korobkin, gave a half-day Cactus tutorial as part of the TG09 tutorials and a two-hour Introduction to Cactus as part of the Student Day tutorials.   

Kathy Traxler was on the TG09 Student Communities committee and arranged the Student Day tutorials, designed for students who wanted a more basic introduction to parallel computing and computational science than the official TG09 tutorials. Isaac and Kathy Traxler facilitated both the computational and programming tracks of the student day program, and also participated in TG09 Bridge Day, which invited middle and high school teachers attending the National Educational Computing Conference to learn about computational thinking for their age group. The Traxlers also helped the HPC Challenge group, who ran a contest throughout the day.

LSU students Oleg Korobkin, Wesley Even, Kevin Tubbs, Sarvnipun Chawla, Qi Fan and Ismail Akturk formed a team for the TeraGrid 09 Programming Contest. Oleg Korobkin, Sarvnipun Chawla and Lei Jiang also presented during the TeraGrid 09 Poster Session.

Pats on the Back:
•    Thomas Sterling and Daniel S. Katz have received an award from NSF titled "Increasing Student Participation in Cluster Computing through IEEE Cluster 2009 Attendance.”  The award is for $48,375 to cover registration fees, meals, and travel for IEEE student attendees at Cluster 2009, which will take place Aug. 31-Sept. 4 in New Orleans.

•    Tae-Woo Lee has received an award from National Institutes of Health through the University of Delaware titled "Modular Surface Plasmon Resonance Biosensor for In-vitro Determination of Protein.”  The award is for $44,106 with a duration of two years.

•    Registration is now open for the Supercomputing 2009 Education Program at the conference in Portland, which will take place Nov. 14-17.  The Education Program helps educators and students learn more about computational science topics and gives  educators ideas to bring these topics into their classrooms.
