BATON ROUGE – Families, animation enthusiasts and children of all ages are invited to meet a film producer, enjoy breakfast and Saturday morning cartoons at the Old State Capitol, learn how to do animation voice-overs and get drawing tips from Baton Rouge Cartoonist Society this Saturday, April 25. All events are part of the Red Stick International Animation Festival, which takes place April 22-25 in downtown Baton Rouge.
Red Stick will feature many special events for families on Saturday, the festival’s last day. The fun begins with Cartoon-a-Palooza, an annual highlight of the festival. Children are invited to arrive at the Old State Capitol beginning at 9 a.m. to watch their Saturday morning cartoons and enjoy a complimentary breakfast. Afterward, children can play on the Old State Capitol lawn, enjoying spacewalks, face-painting, bubbles and more. The Baton Rouge Cartoonists Society will host a free drawing workshop for children as part of Cartoon-a-Palooza.
At 3 p.m. in the Manship Theatre, Red Stick will host a special screening of the recent animated release “Igor,” about a hunchbacked assistant to a mad scientist who dreams of winning the Evil Science Fair. The film’s producer, Max Howard, will attend the screening to introduce the film and participate in a question-and-answer session with the audience afterward.
Festival-goers also have a chance to win prizes including a Blu-Ray disc player and an iPod Touch by answering geography-related trivia questions as part of the U.S. premiere of “Around the World for Free,” Comet Entertainment’s newest feature. This film follows the story of a group of friends who try to recreate “Around the World in 80 Days” without paying for their travels. The film, which contains content not suitable for young children and is aimed at a PG or PG-13 audience, and will start at 6 p.m. in the Manship Theatre with a trivia contest before the film begins.
And, at 8 p.m. that evening, guests can return to the Manship Theatre to see the acclaimed recent release “Sita Sings the Blues,” which Red Stick is showing in partnership with Baton Rouge Blues Week, a concurrent event.
The above events are free, but participants must register for a complimentary Red Pass, available at http://redstickfestival.org/redpass.asp , to attend. Seating in all Red Stick venues is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Also on Saturday, Red Stick will feature workshops for families. Scientific animator Walt Hyneman, who has created some of the most incredible special effects in recent films, will host a workshop on how to make stop-motion animation. This workshop is ongoing from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m (there is a fee associated with this workshop).
The Baton Rouge Cartoonist Society will host a second workshop from 1-5 p.m. on Saturday, teaching advanced inking for families who want to expand their animation skills. And Jamie Thomason, who built the voice casting department at the Walt Disney Studios and has been Walt Disney Television Animation’s director of casting on thousands of hours of television programming, will host a workshop from 1-5 p.m. to teach voice-over skills for animation.
All three workshops will take place in the LSU School of Art Classrooms on the second floor of the Shaw Center for the Arts. Participants must purchase a Gold Pass for $50 (discounted rates available for students and educators) to buy workshop tickets. Seating is limited for these workshops, so the festival recommends early registration.
