Reeling in the Big Fish
At the LSU Center for Computation & Technology (CCT), a supercomputer named for a small fish just made a big splash thanks to the combined PR efforts of CCT and University Relations (UR).
Last month, the two departments teamted up to do a media launch for Nemeaux, the new Apple Xserve G5 supercomputing cluster. Their efforts gained LSU and CCT international news coverage. In order to increase exposure, the team formed a relationship with Apple, and wrote a press release targeted to specific audiences in the computing arena. Those involved with writing the grant for the new computer presented Nemeaux's capabilities at a press conference, which included a tour of the machine room that houses Nemeaux and two of CCT's other supercomputing clusters.
A purple and gold clownfish mascot was created to display during the tour on a sign secured to the machine. E-mail invitations were sent out to friends of CCT as well as local media. The PR efforts were rewarded with international coverage in several publications and Web sites targeted toward Mac users and computing researchers.
In The Spot Light
LSU's Center for Computation & Technology, known as CCT, was featured in a February 4 article on LinuxInsider.com, a computer hardware and technology Web site, about the center's new high performance computing cluster called "Nemeaux." The computer cluster was also featured on TechNewsWorld.com, MacNewsNetwork, HPCWire, Macworld Daily News, Biz Network, and Mac News World in January and February.
CCT's recent Mardi Gras Conference also recieved coverage in a computing publication called Grid Today, and CCT director Ed Seidel's black hole imagery and research was featured on the cover of the National Science Foundation's latest budget request.
