The Advocate By: The Advocate Staff In April, some of the most beautiful days in Louisiana's calendar call for us to go outside and strike up a band and sip cool drinks. The festival season is on us, and this year there are a couple of new reasons to celebrate it. One of them is the Red Stick International Animation Festival, a series of lectures, workshops and screenings of great animated feature films and Oscar-nominated short films. This festival, April 21-23, will use the Old State Capitol and two new locations -- the Pennington planetarium and the Shaw Center for the Arts -- to bring a spectacular lineup to downtown Baton Rouge. Professionals and students interested in work in Louisiana's dynamic film and entertainment industries will get a wonderful opportunity to interact with the masters of film animation. Information on the festival is available at http://www.redstickfestival.org. While a welcome addition to the lineup for April, it's not the only instance of downtown becoming a showcase for artists and their works. The annual Friday-afternoon concerts in downtown are back, starting today, for a six-week run. Earth Day on Sunday is a big downtown festival with great learning and fun experiences for children. The Blues Festival has a remarkable lineup of entertainment starting the succeeding weekend, and then the next weekend is the FestForAll arts and music festival downtown. Links to all these events can be found at http://brgov.com/dept/ddd. We applaud the organizers of these events and welcome their contributions.
