BATON ROUGE- The University of Oulu in Oulu, Finland, has awarded an honorary doctorate to Rudy Hirschheim, professor in the Department of Information Systems and Decision Sciences at LSU's E. J. Ourso College of Business. The University of Oulu awards the title of honorary doctor at the Ceremonial Conferment of Degrees. This particular honor is awarded to an individual who has shown outstanding achievement in the sciences represented within the university or to an individual who has promoted scientific, artistic or other cultural achievement. Hirschheim was awarded the honorary doctorate for his scholarly contributions to the information systems community, for his many visits to conduct research and for faculty advisory tasks he has handled in Finland since 1983. Conferment of Degrees ceremonies are ritualistic and are held once every 5 to 7 years. The traditional festivities and ceremonies take place over a structured three-day period with specific rituals, traditions and attire particular to each day's event. The final activities culminate with a day of sailing. The conferment ceremony is highly formal with the presentation of the traditional academic top hat and engraved gold-tipped academic sword serving as the central feature of the event. The doctor's sword is a symbol for the scientist's fight for what he or she, through research, has found to be good, right and true. The sword is handcrafted and engraved with the honoree's name, the date, a scabbard, a belt clip and a golden University of Oulu emblem.
