Scooby-Doo, Sponge Bob Square Pants and even Santa Claus will be present along with several other classic animated characters at the 2008 Red Stick International Animation Festival, which will take place at various downtown Baton Rouge locations April 16-19, 2008.

Red Stick is an annual event that highlights the latest trends in animation, video game design and other forms of digital art. The festival is sponsored by the LSU Center for Computation & Technology in partnership with the Baton Rouge Area Chamber, Baton Rouge Area Foundation, East Baton Rouge Parish Mayor-President’s Office, Louisiana Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism and Louisiana Economic Development.

This year’s festival offers free film screenings around downtown -- primarily at the Old State Capitol, Shaw Center for the Arts, Manship Theatre and Louisiana Art and Science Museum -- lectures and workshops with industry professionals and several special events for families, including Cartoon-a-Palooza, the world premiere of Comet Entertainment’s new holiday film, “Santa vs. Claus” and a Princess Ball at the Old State Capitol.

Festival goers can log on to www.redstickfestival.org to register for a free Red Pass to attend all festival film screenings. This year, Red Stick will show as many films as possible in high-definition or 35 mm for the best viewing experience. To attend lectures or workshops offered at the 2008 Red Stick Festival, participants must purchase a Gold Pass for $50.

Red Stick 2008 features several special activities for children of all ages. One highlight of the festival is Cartoon-a-Palooza at the Old State Capitol, which will begin Saturday, April 19 at 9:30 a.m. with breakfast and Saturday-morning cartoons. This year, Cartoon-a-Palooza will feature Curtis Jobling, creator of “Frankenstein’s Cat” and the voice of “Scooby-Doo,” Scott Innes, to show cartoons and sign autographs for children. The Baton Rouge Cartoonists Society will host a special drawing and animation workshop for children at 1 p.m. in the Old State Capitol Senate Chamber.

This year, Red Stick will also host the first Princess Ball Friday, April 18 at 7 p.m. in the Old State Capitol Senate Chamber. Girls are invited to come dressed up in their ball gown finery and learn how to dance with their father, brother, uncle, grandfather or best friend. Red Stick will award a prize to the girl wearing the prettiest dancing slippers. The event is free, but families are asked to make a $5 donation to support The Girl Scouts-Audubon chapter, The Boys and Girls Club of Baton Rouge and the Old State Capitol.

And, there will be Christmas in April on Saturday night, April 19, when Red Stick hosts the worldwide premier of Comet Entertainment’s new, family-friendly holiday film, “Santa vs. Claus” at 7 p.m. in the Manship Theatre. Santa himself will make an appearance to watch the movie and share cookies and milk with the children. He also will be available for photos and early Christmas wish list requests.
