LONI Institute Names First Graduate Fellows

The LONI Institute has hired its first graduate fellows. The institute hired one graduate fellow at each member university. LONI Institute graduate fellows will work with faculty at the universities to conduct science and engineering research using LONI’s advanced cyberinfrastructure – high-performance computing, high-speed networks and distributed data archives.

The LONI Institute graduate fellows are:
•    LSU-- Jijun Lao, mechanical engineering; adviser Dorel Moldovan.

•    Louisiana Tech -- Gopi Dathara, engineering (micro/nano technology); adviser Daniela Mainardi.

•    Southern University -- Frank DeTiege, mechanical engineering; advisers Samuel Ibekwe and Dwayne Jerro.

•    Tulane University -- Xiaolan Zhou, physics; adviser John Perdew

•    University of Louisiana-Lafayette -- Jinfeng Chen, computer science; adviser Xiaoduan Sun

•    University of New Orleans -- Huy Pham, physics; adviser Leonard Spinu

Each graduate fellow receives a one-year stipend of $20,000. Fellows will seek external funding to continue their research once their initial one-year terms end.

The LONI Institute selected the first graduate fellows based on their previous research excellence and their potential to use LONI resources, receive future funding and meet the LONI Institute’s success metrics (http://www.institute.loni.org/metrics.php.) The institute selected fellows with previous experience using high-performance computing environments or modern cyberinfrastructure.

Upcoming Lectures:

•    Laxmikant (Sanjay) Kale from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will be lecturing on “Petascale and Multicore Programming Models:  What is Needed” as a part of the Colloquium Series.  The lecture will take place Oct. 19 at 2:00 in Johnston 338.

•    Important: The CCT Colloquium Series has returned and will take place each Friday at 2 p.m. in Johnston 338. Last year, these lectures took place at 3 p.m., but the time has changed to accommodate other meetings. Shantenu Jha is in charge of the speaker line-up.  If you have a speaker wish list or concerns with the lecture time change, please send it to Shantenu at sjha@cct.lsu.edu.

Please Note:
•    The next All CCT meeting will be Oct. 31 at 3 p.m. in Johnston 338.

•    Tom Goodale will give a hands-on Cactus tutorial this Thursday, Oct. 18, in Johnston 338 at 9 a.m. The tutorial will be hands-on, so please bring your own laptop if possible. Loaner Mac laptops will be available on a limited basis. Please make sure you have a working compiler and CVS installed. Fortran compilers would be good but not essential.

•    Web site training for CCT users will take place Wednesday, Oct. 24 from 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.  Between Oct. 15 and 24, please send any update requests for your portion of the site to the Webmaster e-mail.  Once the training is complete, people who currently have administrative duties for the Web site will continue being about to update the site on their own. If you plan to attend or send someone from your section, please e-mail Kristen Sunde at ksunde@cct.lsu.edu by next Monday, Oct. 22.

•  Those planning to attend SC07 should coordinate travel ASAP with Brittany Juneau and lodging arrangements ASAP with Karen Jones.

•    If you have any news for the CCT Weekly, please e-mail PR Manager Kristen Sunde directly at ksunde@cct.lsu.edu.
