Red Stick International Animation Festival is April 18-22
Red Stick International Animation Festival, an annual event that brings together artists, animators, filmmakers, computer scientists to showcase the latest developments in Louisiana's digital arts and technology sectors, will take place April 18-22 in the Baton Rouge Arts District at a variety of historic venues in the capital city. Some highlight events of the 2007 Red Stick International Animation Festival will include: -- An appearance by James Redford, actor and son of Robert Redford, for Animation Collaboration. This part of the festival focuses on helping local schoolchildren use animation to express their feelings about various social issues. Last year, this event started with a focus on Hurricane Katrina. This year, the James Redford Institute will participate in Animation Collaboration, which will focus on organ transplant awareness. Redford is a double transplant survivor, and his foundation raises awareness about this. Redford will work with AnimAction to host workshops for schoolchildren April 4 and 5, and their work will be shown during the festival. Redford also will sit on a speakers panel on Friday, April 20, to discuss this topic at Red Stick. -- A retrospective of films by Karey Kirkpatrick, a Baton Rouge High School graduate who has written numerous animated films, including "Chicken Run," "James and the Giant Peach" and "Over the Hedge." Plans are in the works for a "Chicken Run" reunion to take place at the festival, with various actors who voiced the parts invited to attend. -- A tribute to the late animator Joe Barbera, who died in 2006. Academy Award-winning films from Hanna-Barbera will be screened, and representatives from his production studio will speak. -- Cartoon-a-palooza, a Saturday morning event at the festival where children come in pajamas to watch cartoons on the lawn of the Old State Capitol. There will be a pajama contest, clowns, face-painting, spacewalks and many activities for the children. Breakfast is provided. This will be on Saturday, April 21 at 10 a.m. Registration is now open on the festival Web site, www.redstickfestival.org, for Red and Gold passes. A Red Pass is no-cost to participants and entitles them to attend all festival film screenings. A Gold Pass entitles participants to attend all lectures offered at the 2007 Red Stick Festival, in addition to the free screenings. Gold Passes are $50. However, Gold Passes will be available to any faculty or staff from an educational institution for $25, and will be available to any students for $20. If someone purchases five or more student Gold Passes, the rate will be further reduced to $10 per student pass. In addition to lectures and screenings, participants can attend the workshops offered this year for $20 each, with a $10 each discount rate for students. Attendants must register for a Gold Pass before they can purchase admission to the workshops. Red Pass participants will not be eligible to attend the workshops. If you are able to help with the festival, please contact CCT Event Manager Karen Jones for information on becoming a volunteer. CCT in the News
