Red Stick Festival Begins with Science Day Screenings and Demonstrations
LSU Faculty, Staff and Students eligible for special passes to attend
CCT will host a Science Day lineup of lectures and programs, showcasing the innovations animation has brought to computer science, visualization, medical imaging and other areas of science, to kick off the Red Stick International Animation Festival. CCT researchers Werner Benger and Shalini Venkataraman are making presentations during the Science Day activities. LSU faculty, staff and students who wish to attend the Science Day events at Red Stick are eligible for special passes. Please let your students know about this opportunity! Passes are available at www.redstickfestival.org. During Science Day, renowned scientists and filmmakers will present their work at the Manship Theatre in the Shaw Center during the day, and then show a presentation of the new show “Digital Universe†at the Irene M. Pennington Planetarium at the Louisiana Art and Science Museum that night. Events taking place during this part of the Red Stick International Animation Festival include: • A discussion and visualization screening on numerical relativity with CCT and LSU Department of Physics professor Werner Benger, who will show work related to proving the existence of gravitational waves through simulation and animation; • A visualization and computer games discussion with CCT researcher Shalini Venkataraman. • A screening and discussion with David Bolinsky, a former medical illustrator for Yale University who has received rave reviews for his film, “The Inner Life of a Cell,†which shows how white blood cells work; • A dinosaur motion and animation talk with Steve Gatesy, one of the world's leading authorities on the evolution of locomotion in dinosaurs and birds; • A 3-D animation lesson with Doug Griffith, widely viewed as the finest Audio-Animatronic ® animator of his generation; • Scientific animation principles with Walt Hyneman, of Walt Disney Studios and Sony Pictures ImageWorks; and • An anatomy visualization demonstration from Stuart Sumida, an anatomist and paleontologist who has been an anatomical consultant on numerous animated films. • Hartmut Kaiser recently announced the first beta release of the SAGA C++ implementation! The implementation tries to strictly implement the SAGA Core API specification, and is designed to allow bindings to multiple Grid middlewares by using a plugin mechanism (adaptors). The SAGA software was developed through his work here at the CCT. • Shantenu Jha has been invited present a talk at the Computational Science 2007 [CompSci'07] conference this June in London. His travel to present there will be covered by another award from the LSU Office of Research and Economic Development. Congratulations on this honor! Upcoming Guest Lectures:
