LSU Computational Science Poster Day

Computational Science Poster Day

Louisiana State University

Friday, April 17, 2009

1:00 PM - 5:00 PM, LSU Union Atchafalaya Room

*Sponsored by the Center for Computation and Technology, LSU

**Still Accepting Submissions

The LSU Center for Computation & Technology (CCT) is organizing the state’s first Computational Science Poster Day, open to all undergraduate students in Louisiana.

Computational Science Poster Day is an initiative of faculty working on the CyberTools project, a National Science Foundation-funded effort among Louisiana’s research universities and the Louisiana Optical Network Initiative (LONI) to build new tools that enable advanced computational science. Some projects CyberTools researchers are developing include modeling the coastal region to develop more accurate hurricane warning systems, designing new sensors to analyze DNA, simulating blood flow through the human body and modeling the collision of astrophysical black holes.

Computational Science Poster Day participants will have an opportunity to meet with faculty and scientists working in computational science and cyberinfrastructure to discuss future possibilities for research and scholarship. There is no fee to submit work or attend the Computational Science Poster Day. This is an excellent opportunity for students who intend to pursue a career or graduate school studies in computational sciences.

Students who wish to participate should submit an abstract describing their research questions/purpose, methods and outcomes (actual or anticipated) by Thursday, Feb. 12. The committee invites posters on all topics related to computational science, including cyberinfrastructure, computer architecture, supercomputing and its related tools and technologies, basic science applications, and more!

IMPORTANT DATES:

*Poster Abstracts due: March 30, 2009

*Acceptance notifications: April 2, 2009

*Final Posters/Presentation: April 17, 2009

 SUBMISSION:

The abstract should be 250 to 300 words in length, not including the title. Only the primary presenter needs to submit an abstract, and only one abstract should be submitted for each presentation.

Abstracts should:
•    State in clear terms the central research questions and the purpose of the research.
•    Provide a brief discussion of the research methodology
•    State conclusions (either final or anticipated)
•    Be well organized

All abstracts will undergo a review by a panel of faculty and research reviewers.  Abstract reviewers will evaluate submissions based on the criteria listed above and will assess the overall quality within the context of the specific academic discipline when making their selections for inclusion in Computational Science Poster Day.

Abstracts should observe the following format:

Cover page with:
•    First name, middle initial and last name of author and co-authors
•    Email address of author and co-authors
•    Name of faculty advisor in parentheses
•    Department, institution and institutional address where the research was conducted
•    Authors’ home institution if different from the above address
•    Abstract itself should have the author, co-authors and name of faculty advisor listed after the title

Abstracts should be sent to: Kathy Traxler, LSU CCT, 216 Johnston Hall, Baton Rouge, LA 70803, or by e-mail: ktraxler@cct.lsu.edu.
