Mission The purpose of the IGERT-CFD program is to provide doctoral students with enhanced multidisciplinary education, research and training that will integrate all elements critical in solving Grand Challenge CFD projects of the future: CFD as a fundamental discipline, high performance computing, and numerous fluid dynamical application areas where Louisiana has unique research strengths. These application areas span the spectrum of flow scales (from microns to kilometers) and include: biological/biomedical flows, flows in engineering systems, estuarine/oceanic flows, reservior flows, and astro-physics flows. Today CFD is widely used by industry: from the design of aricraft and auto-mobiles to the design of micron-sized lab-on-a-chip for in vivo biopsy. The potential of massively parallel distributed computing that shorten the calculation time by orders of magnitude can revolutionize the application and practice of CFD. To realize and sustain this potential, the next generation of CFD researchers must individually integreate the mathematical, computational and the relevant physical/ biological/ technological fields. The training of the next generation of CFD researchers must therefore be a cross-product of the various inter-related pieces that contribute to CFD. The CFD-IGERT students will recieve a uniquely designed inter-disciplinary training and will participate in an inter-disciplinary research environment, and will be better trained than their disciplinary peers to take on the challenges for the next generation. |
