Internships

Adeyabeba Abera                     N/A

Luis Alvergue

During summer 2008 Luis was an intern at Shell Exploration and Production Company in the Unconventional Oil Division in Houston, Texas. The main focus was on developing a model of an Electric Curie Heater Circuit that could later be used for control purposes. These heaters are used for in-situ heating of oil reservoirs where temperature readings are often too difficult to obtain. Using voltage and current measurements it was proposed an indirect way of estimating the temperature of the heater, which will then be used to determine if the heater should remain operating or shut down according to the temperature in which one wish to operate.

Michael Crochet                       N/A

Samantha Danchuk

Samantha interned with Asia-Pacific Applied Science Associates (APASA) in Gold Coast, Australia during the Spring semester. APASA is a multi-disciplinary environmental consulting firm recognized as the international leaders in developing forecasting software for the planning of marine search and rescue and oil, gas, and chemical spills predictions. The work focused on a comparative study of two ocean forecasting models, NCOM (US Navy) and Bluelink (CSIRO in Australia) to evaluate their ability to predict large scale current predictions.

Wesley Even                              N/A

Farid Harhad

In the summer of 2008, IGERT fellow Farid Harhad interned for Schlumberger Riboud Product Center (or SRPC) in Clamart, France, for three months. During his second internship with Schlumberger, Farid worked for Well Cementing, a branch of the Well Integrity Technology (WIT) department of SRPC. Farid developed a 3D visualization model of the primary well cementing process (the cementing of a newly dug well)

The team Farid worked for develops software applications that help design and evaluate cementing jobs. The team is interdisciplinary and consists of Dr. Nicholar Flamant, his product manager whose background is in transport phenomena, as well as five software engineers and one physicist. Farid's contribution will be incorporated in the Schlumberger software suite called WellBook used to design and manage wells.

Tyler Landis                              N/A

Nathan Lane                              N/A

Lisa Lee                                         N/A

Kevin Tubbs

During summer of 2008 Kevin Tubbs participated in the Naval Research Enterprise Intern Program (NREIP). During this internship with the Marine Geosciences Division (Code 7400) of the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), located at the NASA's Stennis Space Center (SSC). His work involved numerical modeling of penetrometer installation in the seafloor using the commercial code FLAC3D. It is a finite difference code for advanced geotechnical analysis of soil, rock, and structural support in three dimensions. The numerical modeling is used to interpret and analyze data collected from various types of penetrometers used to characterize seafloor properties.
