Other Research

A number of other interdisciplinary topics have also been identified by the IGERT PI's, but are not included due to space limitation. Examples include:

  • CFD of MEMS based Bio-Sensors:

We currently have a large program in Bio-MEMS with a focus on the development of biological laboratories-on-a chip and medical implants or biosensors. Due to the small scale of these systems, their design can greatly benefit from computational simulation. However, the projects require partnerships between biology, chemistry, CFD, engineering, and computational science.

  • Feedback flow control:

In many engineering and biomedical applications, sensing and control (corrective action) are desired. A specific example is flow and combustion control in gas turbine combustors. This is an area where we have a large program, but limited interdisciplinary effort. Potential for collaboration with computer science and controls (control laws and software), engineers (reduced order models and CFD), and HPC groups exist.

  • Fuel-cells:

The study and analysis of both Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) and Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC) requires analysis and CFD integrating fluid dynamics, chemistry, and structural mechanics. Potential for such collaboration exists under the proposed IGERT program.
