The LSU Center for Computation & Technology (CCT) will host the second Beowulf Boot Camp June 15-19 on the LSU campus. This exciting summer education opportunity offers high school teachers and students a unique opportunity to work with advanced research technology not usually available in a typical classroom setting.
The CCT hosted the first Beowulf Boot Camp in August 2007, with students and teachers from five Baton Rouge-area high schools participating. Based on the success of that camp, CCT is pleased to offer this opportunity a second time.
During Beowulf Boot Camp 2009, students will work hands-on with LSU Department of Computer Science Professor Thomas Sterling , a former NASA scientist who invented the Beowulf supercomputing cluster, and other researchers from the CCT. The students will learn how to use supercomputers for research, develop and run basic applications and experiment with computer science techniques for video games. Students will engage in the following activities:
- Building a computer from its parts
- Installing the Linux operating system on the computer they've built
- Connecting Computers put together by their peers to make a Mini-Supercomputer
- Learning how to program a Mini-Supercomputer
- Interactive activities to help understand how Parallel computing works in Supercomputing
- Running performance benchmarks to determine how your cluster ranks in comparison with the Fastest and Largest supercomputers in the world
WHO: Louisiana High School Students and Teachers Because the CCT covers all costs for this camp, we can only invite a limited number of high school teachers and students to participate. The Beowulf Boot Camp is open for five high school teachers and 20 high school students. CCT will accept participants on a first-come, first-serve basis. This camp is introductory and will cover topics that stretch across all academic disciplines, so the students do not need a strong computational science background to participate. For more information on the Beowulf Boot Camp and its curriculum, please contact Karen Jones at kjones@cct.lsu.edu or 225-578-0595.
REGISTRATION & COSTS:
This camp is free to qualified participants. CCT will provide workspace, parking accommodations and meals during the camp, but participants are responsible for arranging their own transportation to and from LSU’s campus. The CCT can assist with arranging dorm rooms if needed – please contact Karen Jones, LSU CCT, at 225-578-0595, or by e-mail: kjones@lsu.edu if you need to make these arrangements.
To reserve your participation, please fill out the following form. CCT will close registration when the maximum number of participants are included. Click here for registration form. PROGRAM: Click here for Schedule Outline
